I found out rather quickly that a traditional tea kettle isn’t for me. Takes to long for the water to boil and the one I purchased had a few safety issues. I’m sure others would get along just fine with that kettle. But I was tired of almost getting scalded every time I poured water out of it. So recently we spent a lot more money and traded up to the electric kettle above. So far I’m very happy with this purchase.
The description of cordless really isn’t honest. There is a cord with this electric kettle. But the kettle itself is cordless – only the base unit that it attaches to has a cord. Water heats up very fast with this model. Even when using very cold filtered water from our refrigerator it only takes a few minutes to reach full boil. That is with water at the maximum level.
Compared to our old ( actually fairly new ) Revere tea kettle the Breville is much easier to fill. On the Breville you push a button and the lid raises. You then have plenty of opening to pour water in. On the long metal heating element there is a piece of plastic on top. This piece looks as if should be taken off. I’m thinking this is the part that helps raise the lid. It just looks out of place. The plastic doesn’t come in contact with the water so there should be no concern about leeching.
When the water is fully heated the unit shuts off. This is one negative – there is no audio warning altering you to the process being done. Granted you shouldn’t be running the Breville unattended. Compared to having to run a stove with a fan the electric kettle is much quieter. You will know it is on and it does make some noise.
Pouring is much safer with the Breville electric kettle. The design of the spout makes for a smoother pour. The water seems to be hotter than when boiled on a stove. But I’m not getting the heavy steam in my face when pouring. The Revere always had a sloppy pour and a good amount of steam when transferring the water.
You can pour without the need for a kitchen towel with the Breville. The plastic handle is far away enough from the metal so chances of a burn are reduced. This is a big plus compared to the traditional Revere kettle.
The one thing the Breville has in common with Revere is the fact that both are Made in China. There aren’t many consumer products Made in the United States anymore.
