My girlfriend pointed this flag out to me as she headed inside the rest stop. At least the flags were at half staff. But the Illinois flag has definitely seen better days. It was fairly windy that day. So maybe the damage was recent. I have no way of knowing since we don’t stop at this location often. It is possible the current financial condition of our State has slowed replacement of flags.
In Springfield IL there is a well known shopping area that has had problems with damaged flags flying. Many people are unaware of or just ignore proper flag etiquette. It doesn’t present a good image for Illinois to fly any flag in this condition. Some visitors or Illinois residents could take great offense to this. Granted many others could care less.
