This video features me unpacking our new Black & Decker SPCM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Self-Propelled Lawn Mower With Removable Battery. I’d been waiting to own a cordless electric mower for a long time. For years we used a corded Black & Decker electric mower. Last week that mower decided to stop working. It no longer wants to start. The person we normally have work on the mower isn’t returning calls. Since we don’t know what is wrong with the older model and we needed a working mower – we decided to purchase a new one.
Unfortunately the mower above is being returned to the company that shipped it. Not because the technology doesn’t work or we weren’t happy with the purchase. It’s being returned because of what is most likely damage that occurred during shipping. Although some might try to blame me for my unpacking technique. But as the video clearly shows the box was in less than good shape before I started opening it.
Honestly I didn’t notice the very small sticker mentioning the box had been damaged – until I started recording the video & the UPS driver had long gone. They never seem to want to stick around long enough for you to complain about anything. Honestly I was in a hurry to get the mower setup to mow our lawn before the rain. So I just signed on the electronic line and let the driver move on down the road.
Lately it seems like a lot more of what I’m receiving has a box in less than great shape. So I guess I’ve just become accustom to seeing this and no longer get alarmed. This has occurred whether I’m paying for shipping or getting free shipping.
If you look closely at the video you can see where the left side of the mower when facing the front of the box – has slight damage. The screw hole for the plastic deck is damaged. Further up towards the front you can also see where the mower doesn’t look like it should. When unboxed the front damage is more apparent. Honestly I didn’t notice it until after we tried to adjust the mowing height. An online video makes it look like height adjustment is extremely easy. In my opinion Black & Decker just over engineered what was an easy process in previous models. You see our older electric mower in the video with the height shifter. It was the “shifter” with our new Black & Decker SPCM1936 that refused to work. I’d assume it was damaged during shipping. The left front portion of the mower looks like the deck is stuck – which may be causing the adjustment issue. You don’t really notice this until you try to do a height adjustment. What looks like minor cosmetic damage in the video was obviously more.
This whole situation led to a ton of drama in our household. On top of Black & Decker not designing the handle install with ease of use and functionality in mind. The height adjustment not working just sent everything over the top. Especially considering the money we spent and the fact that the mower was needed that day.
You’d think United Parcel Service ( UPS ) would have seen all the CAUTION TAPE on the box. The tape clearly stated the contents were over 70 pounds. So I’m not exactly sure why more care wasn’t taken. Then again anyone who has watched packages being processed on television knows it’s more about quantity than care taken.
While CPO Outlets ( who I purchased the mower from through buy.com ) never got back to my email inquiry. They have been very helpful and friendly over the phone. This is something that should never be taken for granted nowadays. Very few companies offer decent customer support.
FedEx just delivered the return to CPO Outlets today. If no further issues come up – we most likely won’t have a new mower until late next week. Aggravating considering the problem wasn’t our fault, the money spent, the fact I’d been looking forward to this purchase for a long time and that the mower is needed right now.
I’ll save my ranting and raving against electric mower haters until we get the new mower up and running. Of course I’ll be sure to do another unpacking video. In the one above I was holding the camera in one hand while doing the unboxing with the other. You can see the spare battery pack we purchased for the Black & Decker SPCM1936, our electric snow blower ( which got no use this year ) and our old Black & Decker Lawn Hog 18 inch electric mower we’ve used for years.
I should mention – it looked as if this mower had been drop shipped from Black & Decker. Meaning an order placed by CPO Outlets was fulfilled directly from Black & Decker.
We did give the mower 2 small test runs. It worked great – except for not being able to adjust for grass height.
Needless to say Marvin WAS NOT on my favorite person list the other day. He made the height adjustment look very simple. While 3 adults in our home couldn’t get the adjustment leveler to budge even slightly. My aggravation level went through the roof. Especially every time we rewatched this video trying to figure out what we were doing wrong.
